The main topic of Sinek's talk is really all about mission. Mission is the "why" of what we do. When you know the why, you can overcome any how (I stole that from the podcast featuring Charles Plumb). But it's true. Now this being said, mission alone isn't enough. You still need the skills that are rare and valuable (what Newport calls Career Capital). Think of MLK jr. Had he not been such a great orator and leader, would the Civil Rights movement that he lead have been so effective? He had rare and valuable skills that changed our country. That's the power of mission.
It would be interesting to see if any of you brave souls would state your 'why'? Or how many of you know it yet? And it's fine not to. And least you have it in the back of your minds now.
My "why" - is not the same as most teachers. I would guess most teachers teach because they want to impact kids and graduate productive citizens. That's not bad, but it really isn't my 'why.' My why is to help create students who have an inking of what their elements might be and equip them with the skills to handle the dips that come their way so that they can find work they love and that makes the world a better place.
