Caine's Arcade

Let's watch this as a class.

Then, leave these things in the comments/feedback section below

2.  Leave two responses to the take aways or reactions to the video from your peers/classmates.

As always, I have left examples of what I am looking for.

  1. Caine is a great example of the best of these two things: the 'follow your passion' mantra and the growth mindset.

Clearly, Caine has a deep seated passion for arcade games. This is what drives him to work so hard to painstakingly craft his cardboard arcade set up.

But that passion alone isn't enough. What 9 year old isn't passionate about arcade games? Yet, how many 9 year olds have that focus and willingness to sacrifice and persist to see it come to fruition. Caine is the embodiment of the growth mindset.

That is why I believe Caine is laying a foundation for success. Again, what kid doesn't have a passion for arcades and games? Very few. But how many have the grit and determination to pull it off? Again, very few.

It's highly unlikely that 10 years from now Caine will be owner of an arcade or even running one. Most likely his passions will change and he will outgrow them as we all do.

It's his growth mindset though, aided by his passion for creation and innovation, that will serve him very well in whatever career he chooses.

  2. My second takeaway concerns his father. In a world (and a profession, if you are, like me, a teacher) full of helicopter parents (and now lawnmower parents), Caine's dad does him a major favor.

When Caine begs his father for a claw-hook machine, his dad doesn't just give in and get him one to just placate Caine or to keep him out of his dad's way.

Caine's dad does the best thing for him: he tells Cain, "Why don't you just make one?"

That challenge spurs Caine on to stretch his abilities and his creativity to actually create one.

What would have happened had his father just given in to Caine's wishes all along? I doubt we'd have the burgeoning young entrepreneur that has gone viral.
